Welded Mesh Fence Specification for Indian Railways Boundary Fencing

Boundary fencing along railway land is one of the largest fencing programmes in India, and contractors bidding for it meet the same questions on every tender: which mesh, what height, what coating, what posts, and which test reports. This note sets out what railway specifications typically ask for and how to read them. SK Weldedmesh manufactures all the mesh types named below and quotes against zonal clauses line by line; see our railway boundary fencing page for the product summary.

The typical clause, decoded

Clause item What it usually says What to check
Mesh type Anti-climb welded mesh 76.2 × 12.7 mm × 4 mm (358), or 3D welded mesh panel 50 × 200 mm × 4/5 mm Aperture and wire diameter stated together; tolerances
Height 1.8 m, 2.4 m or 3.0 m above ground; concertina coil topping on Y-arm where specified Whether the topping height is included in the total
Wire and weld Hard-drawn steel wire; weld shear strength per EN 10223-7 / IS 4948 Mill TC and weld shear report required
Coating Galvanised (hot-dip or pre-galvanised) then polyester powder coated, min 80 microns, IS 13871 Coating thickness report; colour RAL 6005 green is usual
Posts 60 × 60 or 80 × 80 mm SHS/RHS, 2.5 m centres, cap, clamps, anti-tamper bolts Post wall thickness and galvanising
Foundation M20/M25 concrete, 450 to 600 mm deep, or base plate on plinth beam Who supplies and does civil work
Gates Single and double-leaf, same mesh and height, locking provision Widths and hardware
Documents Mill TC, coating report, third-party test report, guarantee NABL lab reports if asked

Choosing between 358 and 3D panel for railway work

358 anti-climb mesh is specified where people and cattle must be kept off the track: electrified and high-speed sections, station approaches and urban corridors. 3D welded mesh panels are specified for depots, yards, workshops and long land-boundary runs where cost per kilometre matters more than anti-climb performance. Some zones specify 868 twin wire for station boundaries where a flat, heavy panel is wanted.

A checklist for bidders

  1. Confirm aperture, wire diameter and panel size exactly as written; quote the same words back.
  2. Confirm whether height is mesh only or includes the topping.
  3. Confirm coating sequence (galvanised first, then powder) and the micron figure.
  4. Confirm post section, wall thickness and spacing; price foundations separately.
  5. List the documents you will submit: mill TC, coating thickness, weld shear, third-party test, guarantee.
  6. Plan deliveries in phases that match traffic blocks and the civil contractor’s progress.

SK Weldedmesh has supplied welded mesh to infrastructure projects from Kolkata for over 20 years. Send us the tender clause and we will return a priced, line-by-line compliance statement.

Frequently asked questions

Does Indian Railways have a single fencing specification?

No. Zonal railways and project units issue their own tender clauses. Most call for anti-climb welded mesh (358 type) or 3D welded mesh panels on steel posts in concrete, galvanised and powder coated, and quote EN 10223-7 or BS 1722-14 for the mesh and IS 13871 for the coating.

What height is used along the track?

2.4 m is common for boundary fencing; 3.0 m with a concertina topping where trespass is a serious problem or on high-speed sections.

How are panels fixed near a live track?

Posts are set in pre-cast or cast-in-situ foundations and panels clamped on in short traffic blocks. The modular 2.5 m panels mean a gang can fix a long run between trains.

Can SKWM supply against a railway tender?

Yes. We quote line by line against the clause, supply mill test certificates, coating reports and third-party test reports, and deliver in phases to the site programme.
