Welded wire fabric replaces loose rebar in slabs, pavements, precast walls and tunnel linings. In India it is made to IS 1566 (hard-drawn steel wire fabric for concrete reinforcement) and IS 4948. This guide gives the sizes, weights and specification points engineers ask for most. SK Weldedmesh manufactures reinforcement mesh to both standards in Kolkata.
Weights below are for plain wire at 7.85 kg/dm³, two directions, square mesh. Ribbed wire is within a few percent.
| Mesh spacing (mm) | Wire (mm) | Weight (kg/m²) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 × 100 | 4 | 1.97 | Screeds, plaster, crack control |
| 100 × 100 | 5 | 3.08 | Floor slabs, Mivan walls |
| 100 × 100 | 6 | 4.44 | Floor slabs, precast panels |
| 150 × 150 | 5 | 2.06 | Pavements, prefab walls |
| 150 × 150 | 6 | 2.96 | Pavements, prefab walls |
| 150 × 150 | 8 | 5.26 | Bridge decks, industrial floors |
| 200 × 200 | 6 | 2.22 | Road beds, light slabs |
| 200 × 200 | 8 | 3.95 | Road beds, tunnel linings |
| 200 × 200 | 10 | 6.17 | Heavy slabs, hydel works |
| 200 × 200 | 12 | 8.88 | Raft and heavy industrial floors |
Rectangular meshes (for example 100 × 200 mm) and wires up to 16 mm are made to drawing. Use the mesh weight calculator on our home page for other combinations.
IS 1566 allows plain and ribbed (indented or cold-rolled ribbed / TMT) wire. Ribbed wire gives a better bond and is used where the mesh is structural: slabs, precast walls, tunnel segments. Plain wire is used for crack control in screeds, plaster and pavements. State which you need on the drawing.
Sheets up to 4 m × 6 m are standard. Specify the overhang (free wire length beyond the last cross wire) you need for lapping; a common detail is half a mesh spacing on each side so sheets nest without doubling the steel.
SK Weldedmesh has made welded reinforcement mesh in Kolkata for over 20 years for prefab, hydel, Mivan, tunnel, road and bridge work. Send the bar bending schedule or drawing for a quotation by weight or by sheet.
IS 1566 is the Indian Standard for hard-drawn steel wire fabric for concrete reinforcement: wire grades, mesh sizes, weld shear strength, tolerances and testing. IS 4948 covers welded steel wire fabric for general use.
Weight per square metre = wire weight per metre × number of wires per metre in both directions. A 4 mm wire weighs 0.0987 kg/m, so 100 × 100 mm mesh in 4 mm wire is about 1.97 kg/m².
Ribbed (TMT / cold-rolled ribbed) wire bonds better with concrete and is used for structural slabs; plain wire is used for crack control in screeds and pavements. IS 1566 allows both.
Standard sheets up to 4 m × 6 m, including free overhangs for lapping; wire from 3 to 16 mm; custom engineering mesh to drawing.
